Stevens County officials are expressing early concerns about the impending state budget deficit. County Administrator Rebecca Young told the KMRS Community Connection that they’re bracing for cuts to local governments.
“We are looking to the future — 2021/2022. The State budget deficit is projected to be at $1.23 billion and we anticipate that that’s going to have a negative impact for state funding for mandated services,” said Young. “So we are very cautious as we’re moving forward into those future budget years as well. We think this is something that’s not going to just be present for 2021, but that it’ll be present going forward.”
Young said she had concerns about how tax revenue receipts will be affected by the downward spiral of the financial picture at the State Capitol as a result of the Governor’s Executive Orders in response to the pandemic.
